Before it happened…

Brynn had a group of best friends, a boyfriend who loved her, a growing talent for pottery. She had a life. And then…she had none.

After it happened…

Everything was lost. The boy she now knew never loved her. The friends who felt she betrayed their trust. The new life just beginning to grow inside her.

Brynn believes her future is as empty as her body until Christian, the boy next door, starts coming around. Playing his guitar and pushing her to create art once more. She meets some new friends at the local community center, plus even gets her dad to look her in the eye again…sort of. But letting someone in isn’t as easy as it seems.

Now…

Can Brynn open up her heart to truly find her life’s own beauty, when living for the after means letting go of the before?

~~ 4 Stars ~~

” It’s funny how life moves in a complete circle sometimes. There might be lots of bumps in the road and maybe even a few cliffs, but it’s a journey, and sometimes it can bring you to the most wonderful places.”….Brynn

That quote totally sums up this book to me. This book was so different than anything I have read of Nyrae’s before. It wasn’t your typical YA love story. It was more of a journey on the road to finding oneself again. I know exactly why I love Nyrae’s writing….she is so good at creating a story that you get totally and completely sucked into. This book was no different, I felt like I was right there with Brynn while she tried to navigate being a 16 year old girl facing some very serious issues. This is also an emotional journey for Brynn. I will say that this book touches on some really serious subjects and we get to see what it is like to be a 16 year trying to deal with it all and still not lose herself in the process. Now don’t get me wrong there is a love story built into this book, but this book was so much more. It is told only from Brynn’s POV, and normally I like a dual POV better, but this book truly worked better coming just from her. This was truly her story to tell. This book is also told in both present time and with flashbacks. The way the author did this was flawless. She would tell you things in the present but then through a flashback she caught you up as to how we got to that point in the present. I thought this writing technique really worked for this story.

We meet quite a few characters in this book, but I think the most important ones are Brynn, Christian, Brenda, and Emery. Brynn was obviously the main focus of the book because this is her story. I liked Brynn as a character, but I will say there were a couple of times that I wanted to smack her upside the head and tell her to wake up. As I think about it, it is easy for me to say that because I am a 40 something woman who knows better and wouldn’t have done some of the things that Brynn did, but I had to remind myself that this was a 16 year girl who is trying to navigate through a tough situation without a mother to help her through. That’s when I realized I needed to cut her some slack. I think that if I went through everything Brynn went through at that age, I don’t think I would’ve dealt as well with it either. I did enjoy watching Brynn’s journey to “Finding her Beautiful”. She turned out to be a much stronger person by the end of the story. A lot of that strength was due in part to her father and friends. Meeting Christian and his mom Brenda, was probably the best thing to happen for Brynn. I also think that meeting Emery was great for her too. Emery was also a broken girl making some tough decisions and I think that helped Brynn open her eyes to things. I know this is vague, but I really don’t want to say anything specific, because this is a book you need to read on your own to experience the true meaning of the book.

I will say that I was truly happy with how this book/journey ended for Brynn and her friends. It was great to see how everything played out.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for an emotional YA book about a young girl just trying to find her way back to herself, with the help of her friends and family, and a book with a love story hidden underneath it all. If you are a fan of Nyrae Dawn you don’t want to miss this book!!!!!

about-the-author

Writing has always been Nyrae Dawn’s passion. There have been times in her life where she wasn’t able to chase that dream the way she desired, but she always found her way back to telling stories.

One of her loves has always been writing about teens. There’s something so fresh and fun about the age that she loves exploring. Her husband says it’s because she doesn’t want to grow up. She doesn’t think that’s such a bad thing and luckily for her, he doesn’t either.

Nyrae gravitates toward character-driven stories. She loves going on emotional journeys with characters whether it be reading or writing. And yes, she’s a total romantic at heart and proud.

Nyrae resides in sunny Southern California with her husband (who still makes her swoon) and her two awesome kids.

When she’s not with her family, you can be pretty sure you’ll find her with a book in her hand or her laptop and an open document in front of her.

She writes for Entangled Publishing, Grand Central Publishing and is self-published.

Nyrae is represented by Jane Dystel of Dystel and Goderich Literary Management.

Nyrae Dawn also writes adult romance under the name Kelley Vitollo.Website: http://www.nyraedawn.com/

  1. Normally this is not a genre I read. However, after reading the blurb and the lovely review I will have to revisit the thought. My interest is definitely peaked and I will be looking further into this book. Thank you.
