~~ 4 Emotional Stars ~~

What an emotional roller coaster. If you are a fan of Angst and Sexual Tension…then this is the book for you. This is my first book by this author. I really enjoyed this book. The only negative I had with it was that I thought there was too much angst and sexual tension. I would’ve liked to see Elijah and Alex get together sooner. I don’t feel like we got to see enough of their relationship beyond their roommate/friendship status. With that said this book was still enjoyable. It was also a book that had a pretty powerful message in the end. It shows you how quick things can change and no one is guaranteed a Happily Ever After. This story teaches you that you should live everyday like it’s your last because you just don’t know what life will deal you. The flow and pace of the story was very well written. I also loved that this was in dual POV!!!!

“Life is too short. Don’t dwell on the bad, make it better.”….Elijah

This book had my emotions all over the place. I was crying right away in the prologue. Then I was laughing, smiling, swooning, yelling, and then of course I was crying again. (There is a scene towards the end that just gutted me) You will need to see what I am talking about. Even though I did cry quite a bit during this book, I did end up with a smile on my face at the end. I LOVED the ending of this book and the epilogue!!!!

In this book we meet a group of friends who all go to college together and live by each other. That’s Elijah, Lexy, Dean and Seth. Alex is kind of just thrown into this group because she is going off to college and needs a place to stay. Her cousin Jimmy just graduated from said college and offers up his room to her. He tells her that her roommate is named Ellie…although Jimmy left out a very important detail. Ellie’s Gender. When Ellie (Elijah) meets Alex, I have to say that scene was pretty comical. You’ll definitely want to read that part 😉 Over the course of this book we got to see Alex and Elijah’s friendship grow. We also got to see how well Alex fit into this group of friends and watched as they formed there own family. Alex and Elijah were pretty much opposites, but they fit so well together. I just wish they wouldn’t have fought their feelings for so long. I really liked Alex’s character…she was a broken soul from losing her father, but she was such a strong person also. Elijah was all kinds of YUMMY!!!!

“Let me in Alex, I swear I’ll make it up to everyday. Let me be the one who gets to say you’re mine, the one who gets to take care of you, the one who gets to take your sadness away and replace it with happy memories, the one who get’s to hold you at night and tuck you into bed. I want to be with you.”….Elijah

How can you not swoon after reading that?!?!?!?! Elijah kind of reminded me of Travis from Beautiful Disaster. He was the definition of a “Bad Boy”. The one you hate to love but just can’t help it. You definitely need to meet him yourself.

I would recommend this book to anyone who really likes angst, and sexual tension. Also someone who loves a Bad Boy/Good Girl love story. I have to say that this book is listed as a New Adult, but to be honest with you I saw it more as a Mature Young Adult. There are some things/situations in this book that aren’t meant for kids under 17 to read about, but I guess since the characters are in college it kind of lumps it into the NA Genre. Like I said this was a very enjoyable read and definitely not my last book by this author.

~~ 4 “Hot Cowboy” Stars ~~

This book is the second book in this series by Elizabeth Otto, but this is the first book I have read by this Author.  I will say that after reading this book, I’m definitely going back to read Book 1, which is Cole’s Story.  I thought this was a great book.  It just made me realize how much I love a cowboy as a Hero.  I thought the storyline was fun and engaging.  This book will make you feel a lot of different emotions.  I laughed, blushed, swooned, giggled, got angry and even cried (I wasn’t expecting that emotion…lol). I thought the pace and flow of the story was really good.  I did think that the characters could’ve been developed a little more….I didn’t feel like we got to know enough about Tucker and Sophie.  With that said this book was still quite enjoyable.  What I really liked about this book was that there wasn’t an over abundance of drama.  I honestly thought a couple places there was going to be trouble but I’m glad I was wrong.  The only drama in this story is brought on by the main characters.  Talk about 2 extremely stubborn people.

This story is about two people who meet at a carnival and are supposed to just have a one night stand to pass the time and be each other’s distraction.  Well nothing is that simple or goes according to plan.  As Tucker and Sophie spend more time together they realize they have deeper feelings but being that they are both stubborn and think they don’t deserve or have time for love…they put up walls and don’t want to face what is truly happening.  I was happy that Sophie finally opened up to Tucker about what was weighing her down, but I do wish we would’ve seen Tucker open up to her more and explain about his past.  I really liked both Tucker and Sophie.  I thought they were both very strong and passionate characters.  Both had the weight of the world on their shoulders.  It was fun watching these two open up to their feelings and finally break down their walls.

There really weren’t any standout secondary characters…this really did focus on Tucker and Sophie.  Now I know this is part of a series, but I truly believe they can all be read as standalones.  This was my first one and I didn’t feel like I missed anything by not reading the first book.  With that said, I enjoyed this one so much I will read the rest of the series 🙂

So if your looking for that sweet cowboy love story that will tap into many different emotions, then this is the book for you!!

~~ 4.5 “Sexual Tension” Stars ~~

Elisabeth Grace has done it again….she created another FANTASTIC book!!!!  Picture Perfect is book 2 in her Limelight Series and I thought it was just as great as book 1 (Rumor Has It).  All of these books can be read as a standalone, which I personal like.  There is some character overlap from the previous book, but Elisabeth does a wonderful job filling in any spaces that would be caused by not reading the first book.

This was another fun and sexy read.  I thought the storyline was interesting and entertaining.  I was hooked all the way through.  The pace of the book was perfect, but the one negative I had about the book was that again I felt the resolution was to quick.  The “misunderstanding” came towards the end of the book and in turn makes the resolution of said problem a little rushed.  It in NO way took away from my enjoyment of the story.   The only other thing I wished would’ve been a little different would’ve been that we would’ve gotten to see Landon and Skye as a couple longer.  This book was chocked full of sexual tension and push and pull, that when they finally do admit their feelings, they are only together for a short time before the “misunderstand” came into play.  With that said…again it didn’t take away from completely enjoying and losing myself in this book.  But that is why I didn’t give it a full 5 stars.

This story was a fun, sexy and light read.  I think that has to do with the characters that the author has created.  We met Skye in Book 1 and I loved her character in that book, so I was completely excited when I saw she was getting her own book.  Skye is a fun loving, strong and independent character, but she also carried the weight of the world on her shoulders.  She is the daughter of a politician and is constantly having to remember to act properly so nothing tarnishes her fathers name.  That can be a lot of pressure for a 21 year old.  In this book she has decided to branch out on her own and get a place of her own and a job, so she can be self sufficient.  This is where Landon comes into the picture.  He is her boss!!!  I don’t want to go on about the storyline because it would give to much away…and you really need to experience their first meeting for yourself….LOL ( talk about steamy 😉 )  Landon was a fabulous character, but he was slightly broken from something his father did when he was in high school.  When the full story came out, my heart broke for Landon and what he had to deal with.  Let’s just say I understand completely why he has trouble trusting people.  I will say that Landon sure knows what to say to melt a girl’s panties 😉  You definitely want to meet him.

I would 100% recommend this book/series to everyone.  If you are looking for that fun, sexy, light love story between two people who shouldn’t really be together (kind of forbidden….Boss/Employee situation) and love a story that has ALOT of sexual tension and push and pull, then this is the story for you!!!!  Don’t miss out on meeting these characters.  You won’t be sorry 🙂

BLOG TOUR**~**Blissful Surrender by BJ Harvey – Review and GIVEAWAY!!!

reviewtour_banner_BJ Harvey

This is a story of Sean Miller, a dom that will have your panties diving for cover with an eyebrow quirk. That will have even the strongest woman dropping to their knees in submission with a piercing stare, and Samantha Richards, a female cop who’s tough, seemingly impenetrable shell is strong enough to resist everyone except the one man it was build up to protect her against.

**Disclaimer – If you thought the first two Bliss books were hot, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Creative use of handcuffs, batons, a club scene you have to read to believe, and a tough as nails dominant who is blindsided when the one woman strong enough to disarm him threatens his resolve not to let his past dictate his future.**

Like the other books in the Bliss series, this book can be read as a stand alone. There are common characters in the books but it is not necessary to read the first two books in the series to read this one.

~~ 5 “Addicted to Sean Miller” Stars ~~

What can I say except that I absolutely LOVE this series.  BJ Harvey has created a cast of characters and story lines that I am totally addicted to.  As with the first 2 books in this series…this storyline and writing is flawless.  This was also a quick read like the others, I was able to finish it in less then a day, but I am guessing that is because I couldn’t put it down.  I am always left with a HUGE smile on my face when I finish one of her books in this series.  She really knows how to write a story that you feel like you are a part of the book.  The fact that we met Sean in book 1 (Temporary Bliss) and now we got his story, you can’t help falling deeper in love with this man.  This book will have you laughing at times, sad at times, blushing most of the time, and definitely falling in love!!!!  I can’t tell you how wonderful this book was!!!  I truly don’t think my reviews can do this series justice, you really need to read these books!!!!!

We met Sean in book 1, like I said before, and I was so excited to find out that he would be getting his own story.  (Although I have felt that way about all the characters we met in book 1)  I knew Sean’s story was going to be an interesting one, because of his background and the fact that he is a Dominant looking for his sub.  What I didn’t realize is that his story was going to be a second chance love story.  I am truly a sucker for those types of stories.  I love when lost loves are reunited after many years apart.  That is what this story is about.  Sean and Sam dated in college for over a year, but then somebody decided to but in and play on Sam’s insecurities breaking them apart.  (It killed me to know who the person was)  Now 10 years later Sean and Sam are thrusted back into each others lives because of his troublesome brother.  Sam is a Chicago Police Officer.  We met he in the end of Book 2 ( True Bliss – Zander and Kate’s Story )  Sean’s brother gets himself into some deep trouble and the police are called and that is why Sam shows to help him out.  This is how Sam and Sean reunite.  From there we are now reading a cat and mouse story….there was a lot of push and pull on Sam’s side, because she didn’t want to admit that she still had feelings for Sean.  Well let me tell you he didn’t give up…not once.  I really liked Sam’s character.  I liked that she was strong willed and was willing to stand up to anyone who challenged her views.  This was a big change from her college years.  I also loved that she had a softer side, vulnerable per say.  Watching her and Sean reconnect and realize the love they had for each other was wonderful.  Sean was an amazing character as well.  Talk about a man who by nature is a Dominant, but boy did he have a sweet and caring side as well.  And talk about a panty melter….WOW 😉  You definitely want to meet him for yourself.

As for secondary characters…we are introduced to a couple new ones….Ryan (Sean’s Brother), Helen (Sam’s BFF) and Rico (Sam’s Friend and Helen’s Fiance)  I loved each one of them.  Helen and Rico were hilarious.  They kept me laughing quite a bit.  They were also a strong support system for Sam.  Since they were with her back when her heart was broken with Sean in College.  As for Ryan….I liked him as well.  I kind of hope he gets a spin-off book.  I think there is quite a story there.  I was glad to see that he was getting his sh*t together by the end of the book.  Now he just needs to find love himself.

This book is listed that it is a Standalone, and that is true, because we really didn’t see anyone from the previous books, except for Zander and Kate briefly.  Ms. Harvey does a fantastic job filling any missing pieces someone might have if they haven’t read the first 2 books.  Now my recommendation is that you read this SERIES in order.  Yes you can read this book by itself, but I honestly would read all the books (In Order)  You get the full effect and story behind all the characters if you read the complete series.  This book/series is definitely one I will recommend to my friends and one I will read again and again 🙂  Pick this book up….you won’t be sorry!!!!!

**As a side note ::  For anyone who is debating about this book because of my review stating the Dominant/submissive theme…don’t fret.  This is definitely on the lighter side of BDSM…if you even want to call it that.  There is light bondage and some spanking but that is as far as it goes. **

~~ 3.5 Stars ~~

Just Breathe was the first book I have read by Tamara Mataya.  I enjoyed the storyline of this book, but I have to say it didn’t WOW me.  I thought the writing style and flow of the book was wonderful and the pace moved the story along at the right speed.  What I did have a problem with was part of the storyline that I thought didn’t need to play such a huge part of the book.  I loved that this book was about a Librarian (Don’t see those very often as a heroine) and she was suffering from a condition I had never heard of before.  I thought including those factors really made this book stand out for me.  But like I said the author had a aspect of this heroine’s life play to big of a part of the story, and it made me uncomfortable, (recreational use of drugs) I felt she was condoning this type of behavior.  This is all in my opinion and what bothered me might not bother others.

I did like the characters she created, but I will say that I had a hard time connecting with Elle.  I really didn’t feel what she was feeling.  I can’t really explain why there was the disconnect, there just was.  Some of it might have to do with the extracurricular activity that Elle and her roommates had.  Like I said it made me uncomfortable, so that might be why I wasn’t able to connect with Elle.  Dominic on the other hand….I loved him.  I thought he was amazing.  The stuff he did for Elle and her condition was great.  He showed her that he didn’t care that she was living with a condition that made it hard for her to leave her house.  He did everything possible to make their dates special.  I have to say you don’t see many guys who go to these lengths just to date a woman.  He had me swooning for most of the book.

As for the secondary characters we meet, I really only liked Marie.  I thought she was a great friend to Elle and told her like it is.  I was kind of sad that she was cut from the story about half way through.  I know there were extenuating circumstances but I thought she could’ve kept a small part to the story.  I thought Kennedy and Nick weren’t the best friends to Elle.  She lived with them and they didn’t notice that something was really wrong after Elle’s Ex dumps her.  I have to believe that in a real life situation they would’ve noticed Elle behaving differently.  I think they were just too wrapped up in themselves and their bad habit.

As for recommending this book, I think it is worth the read.  I loved the love story and courtship between Elle and Dominic.  I wish it would’ve been more of the focus.  I also thought that the ending was rushed a little and kind of abrupt.  I thought that both Dominic and Elle were willing to forgive and brush things under the rug a little to quickly.  This book is a standalone with a completed story, but I wouldn’t mind another maybe novella, to really complete their story.

Tamara Mataya is currently a librarian; she lurked there for so long recommending books to patrons and shushing people, that she suspects they only hired her so it would be less creepy. Now she’s armed with a name tag, and a thin veneer of credibility. She’s also a musician with synaesthesia – which isn’t an issue until someone plays a wrong note, which makes her want to squirm inside out. It makes for a good live show.

~~ 5 Stars ~~

Let me just started by saying thank you to Tiffany King for letting me have the honor of reading this book before it was released.  I am a huge Tiffany King fan ( I LOVE all her books)  and this book didn’t disappoint.  I think Tiffany has sealed the deal when it comes to writing a spicy NA contemporary romance book.  Misunderstandings is the second book in her NA Woodfall Girls Series and it was just as good as the first book.  This book was different from the first book in how it was written.  I love Tiffany’s writing style and the way she pulls you into her stories like you are a part of them.  This book was a little different because she chose to write this with alternating past and present tense.  I have to say I really enjoyed that.  I liked that we got the history and past story about Brittni and Justin in every other chapter.  The book started out in the present tense and all you know is that Justin and Brittni are not on happy terms at all!!!  Over the course of the book we find out what happened to their budding relationship back in college.  This book will have your emotions going all over the place.  I loved how Tiffany created a story where we got the fun and loving side of Justin and Brittni but then took the story to a more serious side.  Once I found out why there was the riff between them, my heart just broke.  The title of the book was perfectly matched to this story.  I also felt that the pace and flow of the book was great, nothing was rushed and nothing was dragged out.  I also felt she did a fabulous job switching between the timeframe…it flowed smoothly and you were never left feeling confused or lost 🙂

I absolutely loved Brittni and Justin’s characters.  This story really showed a person that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover.  Brittni was a spunky girl who wasn’t afraid to say what she thought and felt.  Like I said my heart broke for Brittni as the story went on…what she went through was terrible and she shouldn’t have had to deal with it alone.  I loved Justin just as much.  He was a misjudged person, but once you got under his layers he was sweet and loving.  He did have his insecurities, stemming from his father issues, which led him to do something that made me mad, but I was glad to see that things were able to be worked out and I was willing to forgive him by the end of the book 🙂

I love all the extra characters  we got to meet in this book….Melissa, Rob, Tressa, and both families.  I loved how Tiffany showed how friendship can get you through any hard time.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a second chance love story.  This was a fun, easy, slightly emotional read about 2 people who through everything never lost sight of the love they had for each other and eventually found their way back to each other. ( even if it was because they were trapped in an elevator 😉 )

She’s a high class call girl. He’s taking over his father’s business.

Seven years ago, they fell in love in Paris.

They walked away at the end of the summer, never imagining they’d meet again.

Now he’s her client.

We fell in love the way you jump from a cliff. Hard and fast with a reckless sense of abandon. The six weeks we spent together changed my life, but at seventeen, I was naive. I was a dreamer. A believer.

Now I’m twenty-four and cynical. I don’t believe in love. There’s no place for such emotions as a high class escort. The only things I’m allowed to feel are physical – and that’s why it’s so damn hard when the client of a last minute job turns out to be the man I left in France seven years ago. When he buys me for six weeks at triple my rate, my agent makes it clear I have no choice but to take the job despite our previous relationship. And my heart makes it very clear I have to stay firmly on top of the cliff this time.

Because for six weeks, I once again belong to Aaron Stone.

~~ 4 “Second Chance” Stars ~~

I’ve read Emma Hart’s other books and thoroughly enjoyed them.  So I was extremely excited when I learned she was branching out into the Adult Genre, I couldn’t wait to read this book.  She didn’t disappoint either.  Emma created a story that kept me interested and also had a intriguing storyline.  I’ve read Escort books before but it’s usually been the Hero who is the escort…so it was refreshing to switch it up with the heroine being the escort.  Emma did a great job at creating characters who are relatable and believable.  I thought the story flowed pretty well….there were just a couple spots towards the beginning that I felt the story jumped a little bit without a good connection.  It was like certain scenes or thoughts weren’t finished.  This in no means deterred my enjoyment of the story.  I loved how she created a second chance love story and was able to tell us about Aaron and Dayton’s past through flashbacks throughout the story.

I have to say that I truly connected with Aaron and I felt his love for Dayton, but for some reason I didn’t connected that well to Dayton.  I loved her character and what she stood for and how independent she was.  And also how she didn’t make excuses for what she did for a profession.  She owned it!!!  What I think made it hard to connect with her was that she seemed pretty cold and aloof throughout that majority of the book.  Her attitude towards Aaron was pretty mean and cold.  I understand why she felt that way but it made it hard to feel what she was feeling once she finally gave into her feelings for him.  I just wish she wouldn’t have kept pushing him away for 3/4 of the book.  Aaron on the other hand was AMAZING!!!  Talk about the right mix of sweet and Alpha.  He totally had his controlling possessive side, but he was also very sweet and tender when he wanted to be.  His feelings were completely believable….at least until the shocker at the end of the book.  But you’ll need to read this book to know what I am talking about.

I have to say the only other character that I liked was Liv (Dayton’s BFF).  The banter between these two ladies was great and had me giggling through most of the book.  I think everyone would love to have a friend like Liv.  I hope we see more of her in Book 2.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a second chance love story.  Also anyone who isn’t afraid of having their panties melt.  Emma did an excellent job with the steamy scenes in this book.  I will tell you this book ended on kind of a cliffhanger.  I am not sure if it truly is a cliffhanger or more of a to be continued ending.  The way this book ended definitely leaves you wanting more.  Thank goodness the second book comes out at the end of June…so I don’t have to long to wait to see what happened between Dayton and Aaron.

**Oh and as a side note for those who are worried or curious….this story has NO cheating in it…I know it is about a call girl but Emma wrote a story that didn’t include cheating!!!

But Becca’s family vacation ends in a matter of days. Will Nikolai and Becca be forced to say goodbye forever, will his destiny catch up to him, or will they change history forever?

excerpt
The hot sun burned down on Becca. “The lake is so clear I can see all the way to the bottom. I wish I’d worn my swimsuit.”
“You could . . . you know,” Nikolai said suggestively, looking at her shirt.
“I am not skinny-dipping, so you can wipe that idea from your mind right now.”
“Look who’s jumping to conclusions. I wasn’t suggesting you skinny-dip.” He delivered a sly grin. “What I was about to say is that you could swim in your underwear.”
“Oh, but—”
“Ut.”He held up a finger. “Let me finish. Your underwear probably covers you more than your bathing suit anyway.”
Becca opened her mouth to speak, but then changed her mind. She knew he was secretly laughing at her.
“What? It’s a great idea.” He smiled devilishly.
“So, you’re saying you’d strip down to your undies, right here, in broad daylight.”
Nikolai stood and reached between his shoulders, pulled his T-shirt over his head, and dropped it at her feet. “You Americans are so uptight about your bodies.”
Becca stared at his strong arms, lean physique, and flat stomach. He began to unbutton his shorts.
Her jaw opened. She wanted to tell him to stop, but even more, she wanted to see if he’d actually drop his drawers in front of her.
He did.

~~ 4 Stars ~~

I have read all of Angie Stanton’s books and each time I do I come away with a smile on my face and a warm feeling in my heart.  She truly knows how to write a story that keeps you interested and also keeps a smile on your face.  Royally Lost was no different.  I know that this book was classified as New Adult but I would actually label it as Mature YA.  This book is a “clean” read but is still able to give you warm fuzzies.  The story flowed at a great pace and I truly felt like a part of the story.  This book sort of had the feel of the movies Chasing Liberty and The Prince and Me.  If you liked those movies you will like this book.  I loved that Becca (h) was from Madison, WI….it was great reading things that I recognized bc it’s my home town 🙂

Becca and Nikolai were great characters.  They were so similar but still very opposite.  Becca was a girl who lost her mother at a young age and felt neglected by her father and was forced to like her step-mom.  All she really wanted to do was find who she really was.  She is forced to go on a European vacation where she ends up meeting Nikolai.  Fate has tossed these two together at every turn.  Nikolai is the Prince of Mondovia but struggles to be who he wants to be.  He doesn’t want to follow in his fathers footsteps.  So he runs away and that is when fates steps in the way for him…in the form of Becca.  These two then decide to take a road trip all over Europe.  I loved the pace the author took with this couple….she made everything feel believable.

If you are a fan of love stories based around road trips…then this book is for you.  If you are looking for that “clean”, fun, light, no drama love story then you need to read this book.  It will definitely leave you smiling and warm your heart 🙂

~~ 4 Stars ~~

Make it a Double is book 2 in the Last Call series by Sawyer Bennett.  I thought this book was just as good as book 1 (On the Rocks)  I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  This book had a little more of a serious undertone to it compared to the first one, and that is because of the subject matter of this book, but this was still a fun and easy read.  I loved Sawyer’s writing style.  She creates a story that keeps you entertained throughout the whole book.  This book was a friends to lovers type storyline, but the author also added a bit of suspense and mystery to this book.  There were some things revealed along the way that I wouldn’t have seen coming.  This book wasn’t full of excess drama which I liked.  This story was a journey for Brody to learn to live life again and to learn to love life.  This was also a story of redemption and learning to forgive yourself for things that happen in the past.  This story’s pace was perfect…I thought the way the storyline played out was very realistic.

We met both Brody and Alyssa in book 1.  Brody is Hunter’s twin brother and Alyssa is Gabby’s BFF.  In On the Rocks, Brody and Alyssa really don’t like each other and aren’t very nice to each other.  We don’t find out why until this book and Brody’s past comes to light.  I was completely captivated by Brody in book 1 and couldn’t wait to read his story.  I was not disappointed in Brody at all!!!!  He was even better in this book.  I loved getting to know him more in this book and what happen to him to land him in jail for 5 years.  My heart broke for him as his past comes to light, what he went through was awful and I wanted to smack Stacy!!!!  I loved watching Brody grow in this book and realize that he was worthy of love and that he finally released the burden he had been holding onto for the past 5 years.  Alyssa was an amazing character.  She was such a strong and independent person.  I loved that even though she comes from money, she knew there were other things that are more important.  I also loved that she saw the best in Brody…no matter what was in his past.  She never gave up on Brody even when all he did was push her away.  I loved that once these 2 stopped fighting and got together they stayed together.  Yes they had there ups and downs and some ex’s that didn’t get the hint, but they worked through everything together.  These two also had some awesome chemistry…..talk about panty melting 😉

We got to see more of Hunter and Gabby in this book which was great because we got to keep up with what they are doing.  We also got to know more of Brody’s family in this book.  I loved his sister Casey and his parents.  The Markham family is such a fun loving and loyal family.  I liked that we got to see more of Wyatt also….I am hoping that maybe Casey and Wyatt will be the next couple to get a book 🙂

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a friends to lovers story without a lot of drama but with enough mystery/suspense to keep you turning the page.  If you are a fan of Sawyer Bennett’s or have read On the Rocks, you DON’T want to miss this book!!!!

☆✮ Synopsis

18780453Death.

For some, it’s simply one of life’s certainties, nothing more. For others, it’s merely a fleeting thought, one often overshadowed by the reckless delusion that they have been blessed with the gift of immortality.

For Aubrey Miller, death is the definition of her very existence. Overcome with the guilt resulting from the loss of her beloved family, she alters her appearance from the once beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed little girl to that of one shrouded in complete darkness, enveloping herself in her own unbreakable fortress of solitude as a form of protection for others.

As she enters her first year of college, her goal is simple: Earn a degree with the least amount of social interaction as possible. What she never anticipates is the formation of very unlikely relationships with two people who will change her life in ways she never believed possible: Quinn Matthews, the boisterous former pageant queen, and Kaeleb McMadden, a childhood friend from her past who never really let her go.

Over the years, as their connections intertwine and grow, a seemingly indestructible bond is formed between the three…

But when death painfully reemerges, Aubrey is lost once again, burying herself deeper than ever before inside the familiar fortification of her fears.

excerpt

“Thank you so much, Quinn. This day has been…unbelievable. And I owe it all to you. You have no idea.” My voice trembles a bit with the admission, because she really has no idea what she’s done for me today.

I feel normal.

A normal girl, about to have a normal birthday celebration with her friends, in a normal (albeit spectacular) dress, with normal hair and make-up.

The only thing that’s missing is a pair of normal shoes.

“Shoes! I need shoes!” I exclaim.

“No, you don’t.” Quinn giggles and reaches for the knob of my bedroom door.

“What? Why wouldn’t I need shoes?”

That makes no sense.

She’s drunker than I thought.

That’s it, I’m officially hiding the champagne.

“You’ll see,” she says just as there’s a knock at the front door.

She winks. “Trust me. Just, stay in here. Don’t come out until someone comes to get you.”

After Quinn quietly shuts the door behind her, I remain seated. As the sounds of Kaeleb’s murmur filters into my room, a nervous excitement flitters through my belly and spreads into my chest. My joy takes flight and I breathe in deeply, contentment pumping enthusiastically with each thrumming heartbeat.

Damn, it feels good to be alive.

I don’t have to wait for long. After a very loud squeal from Quinn in the other room, there’s a knock at my door. My pulse kicks up and I rise from the bed, smoothing out my dress. With a glance in the mirror, I pluck a couple of sections of my new hair with my fingers and set them back into place. “Come in,” I remark, turning in the direction of the door.

The handle turns and as Kaeleb pokes his head around the corner, his eyes find mine. His eyebrows rise as his mouth falls slightly open, and he breaks my gaze as his focus shifts to take in my hair, my exposed neck and the line of my dress. He holds his stare briefly at the crystalline sash lining my waist, and then slowly drifts down to my smoothly-shaven legs and perfectly painted toenails. The left side of his mouth quirks up as he clears his throat, frozen in place. He tears his scrutiny away from my feet to fully step into the room, then turns away from me to shut the door.

I take advantage of the 1.5 seconds his back is turned, and survey him from head to toe. His light-blue button-up is folded to his elbows, displaying the prominence of the flexed muscles along his forearms. As he places both palms on the door and leans into them, his shirt rides up enough for me to see the designs on the back pockets of his dark jeans. They hug his ass perfectly, and for the first time in my life, I want to slide my hands right into those pockets just to feel the hardness of his toned body.

My fingers itch with the need to touch him, but I maintain control while Kaeleb braces against the door, inhaling and exhaling deeply. He stays planted there for a few more seconds until I suddenly begin to feel self-conscious. I run my hands over my hair and dress to make sure everything is as it should be.

Just as I start to ask him if he’s all right, he whips around with a full smile on his face. A few long strides later, and he’s standing right in front of me. Raising both hands, he traces the tips of his fingers along the sides of my cheeks, leaving a scorching trail as they run down my neck and thread themselves into the hair at my nape. With his thumbs underneath my chin, he tilts my head back and looks me directly in the eyes.

“You look amazing, Sunshine. Truly breathtaking.” His head dips slightly and he runs his lips tentatively along mine, the movement so sensual I can’t keep my hands off of him any longer. Fisting his shirt in my hands, I pull him into me and press my mouth hard against his, the need to taste him overriding my caution. A whimper rises in my throat and escapes into his mouth as his tongue slides in between my lips, slowly and deliberately, taking his time to stroke and caress mine. His hold tightens as his fingers curl deeper into my hair, the tinge of pain sending shockwaves of pleasure coursing through my body until they land right in between my legs, the throbbing sensation growing with each strike.

After another gentle sweep of his tongue, he lessens the kiss and pulls back slightly. His lips brush against mine before they slide over to the corner of my mouth, up along my cheek, and then rest them against my ear as he breathes, “Happy birthday. The dress is phenomenal.”
