REVIEW**~**When You’re Ready by J.L. Berg

Can his love mend the pieces of her grieving heart?

Years after suffering the tragic loss of her husband, Ethan, which left her alone to raise their young daughter, Clare Murray still holds the last letter he wrote with the words “When You’re Ready” written in his familiar messy handwriting, unable to break its weathered seal. Ready for what? He was her entire world, and Clare had accepted a life without him, without love. Until years later, fate brings her to an emergency room, and face to face with a stormy-eyed doctor intent on changing her mind.

Logan Matthews is the son of a billionaire who has spent his entire life trying to make his absent father proud. Years of living up to a man who was more ghost than father, and a publicly failed marriage has left Logan cold and emotionless until he walks into an exam room and discovers a woman who can stop his heart, make his body burn with desire and leave his entire world altered.

But how far are Clare and Logan willing to go for love? When their love is tested, is Clare ready to put her whole heart on the line again? Can Logan learn the true meaning of love, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness? When a second chance at love is given, Clare and Logan learn you never know if you are truly ready until you’re ready to risk it all.

***5 Beautifully Written Stars***

Love is a risk, there are no guarantees.  But, in the end, it is always, always worth it.

That sentence says it all.  This book was absolutely amazing.  I loved this whole book, from beginning to end.  I knew going into this book that is was going to be an emotional read.  The Prologue alone tears at your heart strings.  The author did an excellent job in telling this story.  You could feel every emotion but she didn’t linger on things for to long that it made this book depressing.  This story is about finding a second chance at love.  Now when I say that I don’t mean old loves finding their way back to each other, this is about a woman who has lost her first love only to run into her second love just by chance.  This story starts out with Ethan ( Clare’s first love/husband) trying to figure out how to write a letter to Clare expressing his feelings and saying goodbye, because he knew he was dying. ( Like I said that prologue started this book off with a bang.)  From there we fast forward 3 yrs to Clare living alone with her daughter Maddie.  Throughout this book we see how Clare struggled to move on with her life and feelings without forgetting her dead husband.  Her biggest struggle was with the letter Ethan left her after he died.  He wrote the words WHEN YOU”RE READY on the front, she held onto that letter for 3 years, not knowing if she would ever be ready. ( Let me tell you it was killing me not knowing what was in that letter, but I will say this…have tissues handy for when Clare actually does finally read it. )  I felt that author picked the right time for her to read the letter.  This story felt so real to me, that it had me laughing, crying, swooning, and yelling (only towards the end).  This book was written so well, In My Opinion, that you felt like you were right there in the story with them.  I love when a book can do that.

Clare was such a strong female character.  I Loved her, not once was I annoyed by her or pissed at her decisions.  She was very level headed.  I guess in a way she had to be because she had a 4 year old daughter to continue to raise on her own.   You would expect that after the tragic loss of her husband Ethan, Clare would’ve fell into to a dark hole and not come out, well that is not the case in this book.  Yes she had her moments of sadness and loneliness but she pulled herself through for the sake of Maddie ( her daughter )  Logan was also a great character….he definitely made my BBF list.   Logan was a dark soul who didn’t think he deserved to be loved.  He was brought up by his coldhearted father, who never really showed Ethan what love was all about.  So after Logan’s failed marriage, he decided that he wasn’t worth loving and built an icy shell around himself.  But a chance meeting in the ER bring Clare and Logan together.  You could feel their instant chemistry and attraction to each other.  I loved how the author created their relationship.  She took it at a normal speed so it was truly believable.  I loved that Logan didn’t want to rush anything with Clare, but also took in account Maddie’s feelings.  He wanted to make sure he wasn’t a replacement for Ethan and that Clare was with him with all that she is, heart and soul.  Logan, Clare and Maddie made an amazing trio.  I loved their banter, but I also loved seeing how much both Clare and Logan loved that little girl.

The secondary characters were also really great.  Maddie stole my heart right from the start, she was such an adorable little girl.  You really need to read this book to truly appreciate her.  Now Leah ( Clare’s BFF ), she was a hoot.  She is what I would want a BFF to be like.  She had a lot of sass but she was loyal and loving to a fault.  She was there for Clare during the worst time in her life.  Now I will say that Leah lacked a filter when it came to some of the things she would say, but when it was time to be serious, she never faltered.   All I can really say about ALL of the side characters is that they each held a special part in this book and you really need to read this book to experience each ones personality.

I could go on and on about this book, but I don’t want to give the whole story away because I believe this is a book everyone should experience for themselves.  I really don’t think this review does this book justice, but hopefully I have been able to express how I felt about this story and characters.  This is a book I would recommend to everyone.  It is also a book I plan on reading again and again in the future.
